What To Expect

We Look Forward to Seeing YOU!

Ready to earn your Registered Maine Guide license?

The Maine Guide examination is one of the most challenging outdoor certification tests in the country. Many candidates are surprised by the breadth of knowledge required and the rigorous testing process. That's why we've built a comprehensive program designed to help you succeed.

Our students achieve an outstanding 91% pass rate, and we're committed to supporting you every step of the way—from your first day in class until the day you proudly earn your Maine Guide patch.

Whether you're pursuing a Hunting, Fishing, Recreation, Sea Kayaking, or Tidewater Guide license, our experienced instructors will prepare you for every aspect of the examination.

Everything You Need Is Included

Your tuition includes all course materials, expert instruction, and a complimentary Silva compass to help you master one of the most important skills tested during the examination process.

Need to complete your First Aid requirement? We've got that covered as well. A state approved First Aid certification course is available as an optional add-on and satisfies the licensing requirement.

Exceptional Learning Environments

Most classes are held at the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine in Augusta, a beautiful facility that perfectly reflects Maine's outdoor heritage. The campus features a spacious conference room with a grand granite fireplace, along with trout ponds and walking trails just outside the classroom.

We also regularly host courses at:

  • Kittery Trading Post – Kittery
  • Maine Sport Outfitters – Rockport
  • Selene's Fly Shop – Gardiner

This intensive three-day course is packed with valuable information, hands-on exercises, practical demonstrations, and test preparation strategies designed to build your confidence before exam day.

Classes begin at either 8:00 AM or 9:00 AM depending on the location. Arrive a little early and enjoy complimentary coffee and donuts while meeting fellow future guides.

Learn from Active Professional Guides

Your instructors, David Tyrol and Michael Tuminaro, are not only experienced educators—they are active, full-time Registered Maine Guides who spend countless days each year guiding clients in the field.

Their real-world experience brings the curriculum to life through engaging presentations, videos, demonstrations, and hands-on instruction. More importantly, they're committed to your success and are available to answer questions during and after class to ensure you're fully prepared for the examination process.

First Aid Certification

Paramedic Sean Estabrook of the Augusta Fire Department joins our program to teach the First Aid component.

For an additional $50, students can complete a First Aid certification course that satisfies the State of Maine's licensing requirement. This training is typically offered at the conclusion of the first day of class.

What You'll Learn

Our curriculum covers the critical knowledge and skills required to become a successful Maine Guide, including:

  • Wildlife and plant identification
  • Maine fish and game laws
  • Boating safety
  • Client care and professionalism
  • Map and compass navigation
  • Outdoor emergency management
  • Interview preparation
  • Risk assessment and decision-making
  • Guide ethics and responsibilities

Our goal is not simply to help you pass the test—it's to help you become a knowledgeable, confident, and professional guide.

Understanding the Maine Guide Examination

The state examination consists of three challenging components:

Written Examination

A comprehensive 100-question test covering laws, safety, wildlife, guiding practices, and outdoor knowledge.

Map and Compass Evaluation

Candidates must demonstrate practical navigation skills, identify locations on a map, and accurately take bearings.

Oral Interview

Perhaps the most challenging portion of the process, candidates are presented with emergency and "catastrophic" field scenarios and must demonstrate sound judgment, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.

Our course prepares you for all three phases of the examination. By the end of the weekend, you'll understand exactly what to expect and have the confidence to tackle each component successfully.

With a proven 91% student pass rate, we're proud to help future Maine Guides achieve their goals.

Registration & Refund Policy

Due to limited class size and high demand, cancellations made more than two weeks before the course are eligible for a 50% refund.

Cancellations within two weeks of the class date are non-refundable. However, we are happy to transfer your registration to a future course whenever possible.
